Lancaster House Wedding Photographer
Lancaster House Hotel wedding photographer: a four-star English Lakes hotel at Bailrigg on the edge of Lancaster University, with the Dalton Suite for ceremonies up to 120 and the Bowland Suite for a breakfast of up to 180.
Why we love photographing at Lancaster House
Couples searching for a Lancaster House Hotel wedding photographer usually have the whole day booked in one place, and that is the strength of this hotel. You get ready upstairs, you marry in the Dalton Suite, you eat and dance in the Bowland Suite, and everyone walks to bed. It sits at Bailrigg on the south edge of Lancaster, next to the university, three minutes from junction 33 of the M6, which makes it easy for guests coming up from Preston and the Fylde or down from the Lakes.
It is a modern hotel, not a country house. English Lakes, the Berry family firm behind Low Wood Bay on Windermere, opened it in 1991 and added the banqueting suite and 19 suites in 2005. There are 79 bedrooms and four apartments, free parking, and the Sandpiper Health Club with a 50-foot pool and an outdoor hot tub on the decking, which is where a lot of guests end up the morning after. Lancashire County Council approves it for civil ceremonies, and the registrars come from Lancaster.
The two wedding rooms do different jobs. The Dalton Suite is the smaller one, 14 metres by nearly 9, with windows that give it proper daylight; it takes a ceremony of up to 120 or a breakfast of 110, and it divides into two halves for a wedding of 40. The Bowland Suite is the big room, 22 metres long, for weddings of 28 to 180 seated. A wedding of a hundred or more tends to use both: ceremony in the Dalton, then through to the Bowland for the breakfast and the evening, which gives the staff time to turn the second room round while you are outside with a drink.
For photographs the hotel gives us the lawns, the entrance porch, the foyer and the Sandeman Bar with its open fire. On a dry day the drinks go out onto the terrace and the lawns, and that is where the groups happen. On a wet one, the bar and the foyer have enough character for the families, and the suite windows give us the light we need for the couple.
Lancaster House wedding photography: how the day runs
-
Morning
Most brides get ready in one of the hotel bedrooms or the Luxury Suite that comes with the package. One of us is with each of you, so you both get the morning covered. The bedrooms are modern and tidy, and we move the dress and the details to whichever window has the best light.
-
Ceremony
The Dalton Suite set out theatre-style, with the aisle down the middle and the windows along one side. One of us is at the front for your faces and the other at the back for the room and the entrance. No flash during the vows; the daylight does it.
-
Drinks and photographs
Confetti happens outside the entrance porch or on the lawn, then drinks on the terrace. The terrace roof gives shade on a hot day, which is handy for the group photos because nobody is squinting. We take you two away for fifteen minutes around the grounds while the canapés go round.
-
Breakfast and speeches
The Bowland Suite, with the top table along the long wall. It is a wide room, so we work from both ends during the speeches: one of us on the speaker, the other on the reactions at the far tables.
-
Evening
The first dance in the Bowland Suite. The hotel has done sparklers and dry ice for couples before, and the room is dark enough in the evening that we light it ourselves. If you add Same-Day Prints, this is when we hand them over.
Best photo spots at Lancaster House
-
The lawns
The open grass in front of the hotel, with room for a big group shot from a step-ladder. Best in the hour before the breakfast.
-
The entrance porch
The hotel’s own photos use it for the couple and for the coloured-flare group shot. It is covered, so it works in the rain.
-
The terrace
Shaded on a bright day and a natural place for the drinks reception. Family groups go here when the sun is high.
-
The Sandeman Bar
An open fire and low seats. A warm, indoor spot for the two of you on a winter wedding.
-
The Dalton Suite windows
Window light for the signing and for a quiet portrait before the guests come through.
Light and timing
The Dalton Suite has decent daylight from its windows, and a Samantha Broadley wedding here was photographed without flash for the ceremony. The Bowland Suite is a large function room with its own lighting, so for the breakfast and the first dance we bring flash and set it up before you come in. Outside, the lawns and terrace are open to the sky, and the terrace roof gives you shade when the sun is overhead, which is why we put the groups there in summer. We have not found a published aspect for the terrace, so on your pre-wedding visit we walk the grounds with you and pick the sunset spot for your date. Wet weather is well covered: the porch, the foyer and the Sandeman Bar all work indoors.
Drone
Flying is possible here. No flight restriction zone. The Heysham power station zone (EG R444) is about 5 km to the north-west at its nearest edge. The hotel publishes no drone policy, so we clear it with the co-ordinator. We check Drone Assist on the day, keep clear of guests, and refund the drone if the weather or permission stops us. Add the flyover for £149 with photography.
Questions about photographing a wedding at Lancaster House
Can you photograph the ceremony in the Dalton Suite without flash?
Yes. The Dalton Suite has windows along one side and we work with that light and fast lenses. We do not fire flash during the vows anywhere.
We have a hundred guests and are using both suites. Does that change anything for the photographs?
It helps. The ceremony in the Dalton Suite means the Bowland Suite is set for the breakfast from the start, and we can photograph the room dressed and empty while you are at the drinks. Your group photos happen on the lawn in between, and we keep that to twenty minutes so you get your drinks reception back.
Can you fly the drone at Lancaster House?
There is no flight restriction zone over Bailrigg. The Heysham power station restricted area is about 5 km away at its nearest, and Warton aerodrome is 30 km to the south-west. The hotel does not publish a drone policy, so we ask the wedding co-ordinator when you book. Add it for £149 with photography.
Can we have Same-Day Prints in the Bowland Suite?
Yes. We print during the evening and hand them over in the Bowland Suite before the night is over. The optional set of ten is £129.
Do you charge travel to Lancaster?
We are in Blackpool, FY6, and Lancaster is beyond our 10-mile free area, so mileage at 50p a mile is added to the quote. You see the figure before you book.
