Ashton Memorial Wedding Photographer
Ashton Memorial wedding photographer: a Grade I Edwardian domed folly on the hill above Lancaster, run by the city council, with the ground floor licensed for ceremonies and a gallery that looks out over Morecambe Bay.
Why we love photographing at Ashton Memorial
If you are looking for an Ashton Memorial wedding photographer, the thing to know is that this is a ceremony venue more than a whole-day venue. Lancaster City Council hires out the Memorial in two-hour slots, at 10, 12, 2 or 4, and the ground floor is the part that is licensed. You arrive, you marry under the dome, you have a glass of something and your confetti, and then most couples head down the hill into Lancaster for the rest of the day. We follow you on, whether that is Lancaster Brewery, a hotel or a village hall out in Wyresdale.
The building is worth the fuss. Lord Ashton had it built in 1909 in memory of his wife, John Belcher designed it, and it is Grade I listed, in Portland stone with a copper dome you can see from the M6. It stands on a plateau at the top of Williamson Park, and the ground falls away on every side but the east, so the steps and the terrace look out over Lancaster, the Lune and Morecambe Bay towards the Lake District. Inside, the hall is tall and pale and full of daylight, with a staircase up to the first-floor gallery, which you get sole use of during your hire.
A ceremony of up to 120 fits on the ground floor, counting the registrars and the staff. If you want to stay, the council also does evening hire from 5.30pm to 11.30pm: 80 for a sit-down meal or 120 without tables, with a self-contained caterer because there is no kitchen and no running water in the building. A few couples do the whole day here, with the speeches and the first dance under the dome, and that works well for a smaller wedding.
The honest bit: the park is open 24 hours a day and the Memorial is a public building until 5pm. The council cannot stop a walker wandering up the steps while you are having your drinks, and the public toilets next door stay open. In practice people are polite and keep their distance, and the two of us can usually frame them out. We plan the group photos on the terrace side where the view is, and keep the long shots for the moment the steps are clear.
Ashton Memorial wedding photography: how the day runs
-
Morning
There is nowhere to get ready at the Memorial, so preparations happen in Lancaster. Lancaster House Hotel on the south side of the city is a common choice, as are the Sun Hotel and the Castle Inn in the centre. One of us is with you there while the other goes up to the park early for the building and the guests arriving.
-
Arrival
Guests park in the Quernmore Road car park by the Pavilion Cafe, which is closed to the public and reserved for you, and walk up to the Memorial. Two bridal cars can come right to the front. The walk up from the Wyresdale Road car park is steep, so we tell grandparents to use the Quernmore Road side.
-
Ceremony
The council gives you 30 minutes before the ceremony, about 30 minutes for the ceremony itself, and an hour after. The ceremony is on the ground floor under the dome. One of us stands at the front for faces and the other at the back for the room, and the daylight from the high windows means we do not need flash for the vows.
-
Confetti and drinks
Confetti has to be biodegradable and the council asks for it off the steps, because it stains the stone and gets slippy. We do it on the terrace to one side instead, with the bay behind. Drinks you bring yourselves are served inside the Memorial by the park staff, and glasses are not allowed outside, so the mingling is indoors.
-
Portraits
We use the last twenty minutes of your slot for the two of you: the steps, the gallery with the view, the colonnade, and the paths through the park. The Butterfly House is a short walk and a good wet-weather option. Then everyone moves on to the reception, and we go with you.
Best photo spots at Ashton Memorial
-
The west steps
The long flight of steps down the slope with the Memorial behind you. This is the big one, and it is best with the group on the steps and us at the bottom.
-
The gallery
The first-floor balcony looks out over the bay and towards the Lakeland fells. Good for the two of you with the view, and for a wide shot down onto the guests gathering below.
-
Under the dome
Looking straight up from the ground floor. We shoot this during the signing while everyone is sat down.
-
The colonnade and the fountain
The columns give shade on a bright day and shelter on a wet one. The fountain splits the steps and makes a neat foreground.
-
The park paths
Williamson Park has 54 acres of woodland walks. In late October the colour is worth a fifteen-minute detour.
Light and timing
The Memorial sits on an exposed hilltop, so it is bright and often windy. The hall inside is lit by tall windows and is pale enough to photograph without flash for most of the day, and the house lights are what you get in the evening, so for an evening hire we bring our own lights for the first dance. The steps face west, which means the terrace is in sun from midday and the sunset drops over Morecambe Bay straight in front of the building. A 4pm slot in autumn puts your portraits at golden hour; a 2pm slot in summer means harsh sun on the steps, and we move the groups to the shaded colonnade side. If it rains, the ground floor and the gallery are both big enough for all the family groups, and the Butterfly House is a few minutes away for something green and warm.
Drone
Dom holds the CAA licence and flies the drone. There is no flight restriction zone over Williamson Park. The nearest restricted airspace is EG R444 around Heysham power station, a circle of 2 nautical miles, whose edge is about 5 km to the north-west. The park is council land and open to the public all day, so we ask the park’s events team for permission before we fly and we keep clear of anyone who is not part of your wedding. The aerial shot of the dome with Lancaster and the bay behind it is the reason to add the drone here. Weather permitting, with a refund if we cannot fly. Add it for £149 with photography.
Questions about photographing a wedding at Ashton Memorial
We are hiring the Memorial for the ceremony alone. Can you cover the ceremony and then our reception somewhere else?
Yes, that is how most Ashton Memorial weddings work. Our Half Day covers the ceremony, the confetti, the groups and the start of the drinks; the Full Day runs from preparations in Lancaster through to the first dance wherever your reception is. We are based in Blackpool, FY6. Lancaster is beyond our 10-mile free travel area, so mileage at 50p a mile goes on the quote, and you see it before you book.
Can the public walk in during our ceremony?
During your two-hour hire you have sole access to the building, and the park staff are on the door. The park itself is open, so people will be about on the paths and the steps outside. We frame the photographs so they are not in them, and the view does the rest.
Where do the confetti photos happen?
Not on the steps. The council asks for biodegradable confetti away from the stone, so we set the confetti line up on the terrace to one side with the bay behind. It is exposed up there, so expect the wind to take some of it, which looks good anyway.
Can we have Same-Day Prints at the Memorial?
If you are staying for an evening hire, yes: we print on site and hand them over under the dome before the night is over. If you are moving on to a reception elsewhere, we set the printer up there instead. The optional set of five for the grandparents is £69.
Is there anywhere for a wet-weather photo?
The hall and the gallery are both good in the rain, with the daylight from the high windows. The Butterfly House is a short walk and other photographers use it for couple portraits in the rain. Lancaster itself has the castle and the Priory ten minutes down the hill.
