Pyes Mill Wedding Photographer
Pyes Mill wedding photographer, the hotel that was The Mill at Conder Green: a canalside mill of the 1740s by the sixth lock on the Glasson branch, four miles south of Lancaster, with the Locks suite for 120, a licensed lawn and 21 bedrooms.
Why we love photographing at Pyes Mill
If you are searching for a Mill at Conder Green wedding photographer, the venue has a new name. The old business closed in February 2025, the building was sold in October, and it reopened in January 2026 as Pyes Mill, with the wedding side trading as the Locks Venue. The new owners are a separate company, so anything you read about the old Mill is history. The building, the canal and the lawn are the same, and they are the reason to marry here.
The mill is believed to date from the 1740s, powered by the River Conder, and the Lancaster Canal Company bought it in 1824 and rebuilt it to use the water it was diverting into the new Glasson branch. The name comes from William Pye, who leased it in 1826. It sits right on the sixth lock, about a mile along the towpath from Glasson Dock, four miles south of Lancaster, on a 1.7-acre site with lawned gardens looking out towards the Bowland fells. The Lancashire Coastal Way passes through Conder Green a few minutes away, and Cockersand Abbey is a couple of miles down the estuary.
The Locks is a bright, modern suite that seats up to 120 for the ceremony and the breakfast, with more in the evening, and it comes with exclusive use in every package. Ceremonies happen in the suite or on the licensed lawn outside, with drinks by the canal afterwards, and the venue will put a marquee or tipi on the lawn if you want the whole day outside. There are 21 bedrooms including the bridal suite, you need to book five of them to hold a date, dogs are welcome at the ceremony, and last orders are half past midnight.
For photographs the canal is the thing. The hotel stands on the north bank with the lock beside it, and there is a footbridge over the water that gives you the mill behind you and the towpath running off towards Glasson. The lawn is on the canal side, so the drinks, the confetti and the groups all happen with the water in the background, and the fairy-light terrace does the evening.
Pyes Mill wedding photography: how the day runs
-
Morning
The bridal suite is part of the package for the night before and the night of, so most preparations happen in the hotel. One of us is with each of you, and the hotel rooms are small enough that we keep it simple: the window, the dress, the people.
-
Ceremony
The Locks suite, or the lawn with the canal behind you. On the lawn one of us works from the aisle side and the other from the water side so the mill is in the frame.
-
Confetti and drinks
Confetti on the lawn, then drinks by the canal. Boats come through the lock on a summer weekend, which makes for a good photograph and a short wait while the gates swing.
-
Portraits
The footbridge, the towpath and the lock gates. Fifteen minutes, during the drinks. If you want the estuary, Glasson Dock is a mile along the towpath, which is a second trip by car rather than a walk.
-
Breakfast and speeches
The Locks, set for 120. It is a wide, pale room that holds daylight well, and we stand one at each end for the speeches.
-
Evening
The first dance in the Locks, and the fairy-light terrace outside for guests who want air. If you add Same-Day Prints, this is where they are handed over.
Best photo spots at Pyes Mill
-
The footbridge
Over the canal with the mill behind you. The photograph that says where you married.
-
The lock gates
Thurnham Mill Lock, right beside the hotel. Stone, timber and water, and sometimes a boat.
-
The towpath towards Glasson
Flat, straight and quiet. Best in the last hour of light, when the sun is over the estuary end.
-
The lawn and the hedge
The licensed lawn, sheltered from the canal by a tall hedge. The big group shot goes here.
-
The fairy-light terrace
After dark, with the lights on and the mill wall behind.
Light and timing
The canal runs east to west past the mill and the building is on the north bank, so the lawn and the garden look south over the water and get the sun all day. Sunset is to the west, down the canal towards Glasson and the bay, further north in midsummer and further south in winter. That puts the towpath looking west as the sunset spot, and the mill itself is lit from the front in the late afternoon. The Locks is a bright suite with daylight for the ceremony, and we bring flash for the speeches and the evening. The big hedge along the canal is worth knowing about: it shelters the garden, but it also hides the water from the lawn, so the canal photographs are from the bridge and the towpath rather than the drinks reception. For rain, the suite, the bar and the beamed rooms of the old mill all work indoors.
Drone
Dom flies the drone. Pyes Mill is outside restricted airspace, but it is close to one: the Heysham power station zone, EG R444, is a circle of 2 nautical miles whose edge is about 3.6 km to the north-west, across the Lune estuary. We stay east of the canal and never fly out towards the bay. There is no aerodrome nearby. The new owners have not published a drone policy and all suppliers need the venue’s approval, so we ask when you book. The aerial of the mill, the lock and the straight line of the canal is the shot. Add it for £149 with photography, with the weather refund.
Questions about photographing a wedding at Pyes Mill
We booked this as The Mill at Conder Green. Does anything change for the photographs?
The building, the lawn and the canal are as they were. The suite is now called the Locks and the hotel is Pyes Mill, under new owners since January 2026, so any supplier list or room name from before then is out of date. We plan the day with the new team.
Can you photograph a lawn ceremony with the canal behind us?
Yes. The lawn is licensed and one of us stands on the water side so the mill and the lock are behind you. If it rains, the Locks suite is a few steps away.
Can you fly the drone at Pyes Mill?
Yes, with care. The Heysham restricted zone starts about 3.6 km away over the estuary, so we fly on the canal side and keep away from the bay. We ask the venue first. See the drone page.
Is Glasson Dock worth going to for photographs?
It is a mile along the towpath, so it is a car trip rather than a stroll in a dress. On a clear evening the dock and the estuary are worth fifteen minutes, and we build it into a Full Day if you want it.
Can we have Same-Day Prints at the Locks?
Yes. We print during the evening and hand them over in the Locks before the night is over. The optional set of ten is £129.
