How it works

How we photograph a christening in Lancashire

Most christenings round here are a Sunday morning or early afternoon service, then a buffet at a pub, a hotel or a social club. We arrive at church half an hour before the family so we can have a word with the vicar or priest. Every church is different about photos during the service. Some are happy for us to move about quietly, some want us still in one spot, and a few ask for no photos until the water. We ask first and we stick to what they say. It’s their service.

Catholic baptisms at Sacred Heart on Talbot Road or St Kentigern’s, Church of England christenings at St John’s in the town centre or St Chad’s in Poulton, and the smaller village churches out towards Pilling and Garstang: the light in each is different and most of it comes from the side. We shoot with no flash wherever we can, so the service looks like the service, not a flashbulb at the font.

Naming days are more relaxed. The register office on South King Street in Blackpool does them, and so do most hotels, so you can hold the ceremony and the party in the same room. There’s no vicar to ask and we can be closer for the words and the signing.

Afterwards we do the group photos while everyone is still outside and dressed up: the baby with both sets of grandparents, the godparents together, the four generations if you have them. Ten minutes, done. Then we go to the party and photograph it as it happens, the gifts being opened and the baby being handed round the room. Nowt posed.

We cover Blackpool, Poulton, Thornton and Cleveleys, Lytham St Annes, Preston, Lancaster and the rest of Lancashire. Travel is free within 10 miles of Poulton-le-Fylde and 50p a mile after that.

Same-Day Prints

A photo for the grandparents before they go home.

Add Same-Day Prints to the booking and we edit and print a set during the party, so the grandparents and godparents leave with a photograph in a folder rather than a promise of one. Choose 5, 10 or 25 prints, from £69 for 5. It’s an optional add-on and the price is on top of the photography. How Same-Day Prints work.

Questions

How do we book?

Check your date, choose a package and pay a £100 deposit online. We hold a date for 7 days while you decide.

Do you charge for travel?

Travel within 10 miles of our base (FY6) is free. After that it’s 50p a mile, and we travel up to 60 miles.

Do you photograph same-sex weddings and every kind of celebration?

Of course.

Are you insured?

Yes. We hold public liability insurance and carry backup cameras and cards. Venues that ask for a certificate get one.

Do we get the photos on the night?

Add Same-Day Prints and 5, 10 or 25 of them, yes. The full gallery follows within six weeks.

Will the church let you take photos during the service?

Usually, with conditions. We ring or email the church beforehand and follow whatever they ask, which might mean no photos during the baptism itself. If that’s the case we photograph the moments either side and the family at the font once the service has finished.

Do you need a Full Day for a christening?

Rarely. A Half Day is four hours, which covers the service and the first few hours of the party. If the do carries on into the evening with a DJ, a Full Day covers it.

Can you do the christening and a family portrait on the same day?

Yes. Everyone is already together and dressed up, so we use ten minutes after the service for the group photos. If you want something more relaxed, have a look at our family portrait sessions.
