Lytham Hall Wedding Photographer
Lytham Hall wedding photography for a ceremony in the Gold Room and portraits in 78 acres of parkland, before you head off to your reception in Lytham, St Annes or beyond.
Why we love photographing at Lytham Hall
If you are getting married in the Gold Room and looking for a Lytham Hall wedding photographer, here is how we would work the place. Lytham Hall is a Georgian house of the 1750s by John Carr of York, Grade I listed, and it sits at the end of a mile-long drive off Ballam Road with 78 acres of parkland round it. It is run by the Heritage Trust for the North West, so you are marrying in a working museum. That shapes the day, and it is worth understanding before you plan the timings.
The Hall does ceremonies, not receptions. You get the Gold Room for the wedding itself, with room for 60 guests plus the two of you, the registrars and any musicians, and then drinks and canapés in the Grand Entrance Hall and out on the front lawn. The ground-floor rooms are yours for photographs while that happens. Then everyone leaves for the reception, in Lytham, St Annes, Blackpool or wherever you have booked it. The Hall does daytime functions and nothing in the evening, so the whole Lytham Hall part of the day is over by late afternoon.
That suits us. A ceremony and drinks at Lytham Hall is a natural fit for our Half Day, from £599 with both of us there, and if the reception is close by we carry on with a Full Day and cover the speeches and the first dance too. Lee and Dom are based in Poulton-le-Fylde, on the other side of Blackpool from Lytham, so it is a short run down the coast.
Two things to sort with the Hall early. Commercial photography inside and in the grounds needs the Trust’s permission, and outside contractors are asked to be in touch beforehand and to show third-party insurance. We are insured, and we will contact the estate office ourselves once you have booked us, so you have nothing to chase. The Hall also bans real candles, smoke machines and dry ice, which rules out the haze-and-sparkler type of photograph, so do not plan on one.
Lytham Hall wedding photography: how the day runs
-
Morning
There is nowhere to get ready at the Hall, so the morning happens at home or at a hotel in Lytham or St Annes. One of us is with you for the last hour of preparations and the other goes ahead to the Hall to photograph the Gold Room set up, the drive and the front of the house before anyone arrives. The parkland opens to visitors at ten, so there will be dog walkers about on the paths. They are never a problem, we just pick angles.
-
Arrival and ceremony
Guests are welcomed in the Grand Entrance Hall, a stone-flagged room with rococo plasterwork, and that is where the arrivals photographs are. The Gold Room is an 18th-century drawing room with hand-painted wallpaper, ceiling-high gold-leaf mirrors and a marble fireplace, and its windows look over the lawn. It seats 60, so it is tight and intimate, and we stand at the sides, not in the aisle. One of us is on your faces, the other on the room and the parents.
-
Drinks and photographs
Drinks and canapés are served in the Grand Hall and on the front lawn. This is the Lytham Hall part that matters for pictures: the family groups on the steps with the east front behind, then twenty minutes for the two of you in the gardens while everyone else has a second glass. The Parterre and the Paradise Wall are close to the house. The Mount and the Lily Pond are a short walk.
-
Leaving
The drive is a mile long and it is the shot everyone wants, the car heading away between the trees. We photograph it from the lawn side as you set off, and if you have added the drone and the airport has cleared it, from above.
-
Reception elsewhere
If we are with you for the full day we travel with you to the reception and carry on through the speeches to the first dance. Same-Day Prints, if you have added them, are handed over at the reception venue before the night is over.
Best photo spots at Lytham Hall
-
The east front and the steps
The classic Lytham Hall photograph. The front faces east, so it is lit in the morning and in soft shade for an afternoon ceremony, which is what you want for the group photographs.
-
The Grand Entrance Hall
Stone flags, plasterwork and a red carpet. Big enough for the whole party in one frame from the far end.
-
The Gold Room
Gold leaf and mirrors. We use the mirrors on purpose for a second angle of the vows, and keep ourselves out of them.
-
The Parterre and the Paradise Wall
Formal and close to the house, so you lose no time. Good in any weather.
-
The Lily Pond and fountain
Still water and the house behind. Best when the fountain is on and the sky is doing something.
-
The Mount and the mile-long drive
The Mount is the high point of Lytham, and the drive is the long, straight, tree-lined walk. Both are worth the walk if the timing allows.
Light and timing
The Gold Room is the thing to plan around. Gold leaf and ceiling-high mirrors throw warm colour onto everything, and the mirrors show you whatever is behind the camera. We shoot the ceremony on the window light, with one of us low and to the side so the mirrors show the room and not a photographer, and we correct the colour in the edit so your dress stays white rather than cream. We would rather not use flash in there at all, and with the window light we usually do not need to. The house faces east. A morning ceremony means sun on the front and the steps; an afternoon one means the front is in open shade, which is softer and easier for the family groups, and the sun is round the back on the garden side. The parkland is wooded, so there is shade to be found at midday, and the lawns and the Lily Pond get long light late on. The Hall closes to functions in the afternoon, so you will not be here for golden hour; the light you get is daytime light, and we work with it. On a wet day the Grand Entrance Hall and the ground-floor rooms are exclusively yours, and a Georgian house in the rain is no hardship for photographs. We bring a small flash for the Entrance Hall if the sky is black, and that is all.
Drone
Lytham Hall sits just inside the Blackpool Airport flight restriction zone, about 4.5 km from the runway, so the drone needs the airport’s permission before it leaves the bag. Blackpool Airport takes requests through its Air Portal system with 72 hours’ notice, and we make that application ourselves. The Hall is private land run by a charity, so we ask the Trust as well. The airport has cleared flights over the Hall before, and the Trust let a drone light show fly from the grounds in 2024, but neither is automatic, which is why we price the drone as an add-on at £149 with photography and refund it if either permission does not come through or the weather beats us. The drive, the house and the parkland from above are worth the paperwork. We check Drone Assist on the morning, because Lytham gets temporary restrictions when the Open is at Royal Lytham. Questions about photographing a wedding at Lytham Hall
Can we have our reception at Lytham Hall?
No. The Hall sells the ceremony with drinks and canapés, and it does daytime functions, nothing in the evening. Your guests leave for the reception elsewhere. Most of the couples we talk to pair it with a hotel or a marquee in Lytham or St Annes, and we cover both on a Full Day.
How many guests can be at the ceremony?
The Gold Room is licensed for 60 guests plus the couple, the two registrars and any musicians. The Hall’s weddings page puts it at about 65 in all. It is a small, close room, and it photographs that way.
Do you need permission to photograph at Lytham Hall?
Yes. Commercial photography inside and in the grounds needs the Trust’s permission, and contractors are asked to make contact beforehand and show their insurance. We handle that with the estate office once you have booked us.
Can you fly the drone at Lytham Hall?
With permission. The Hall is just inside the Blackpool Airport zone, so we apply to the airport 72 hours ahead and ask the Trust. It is an optional add-on at £149 with photography, refunded if we cannot fly.
Where do the couple photographs happen?
In the gardens during the drinks: the Parterre and the Paradise Wall by the house, then the Lily Pond or the Mount if there is time. Twenty minutes, while the canapés go round.
