Why we love photographing at Clifton Arms

If you have booked the Clifton Arms and you want a wedding photographer who knows Lytham front, this page is for you. The Clifton Arms is the red-brick hotel on West Beach, Grade II listed and built in 1839 to 1840, with the big bay windows facing south over Lytham Green to the Ribble estuary. It has 48 bedrooms, a ceremony room in the Clifton Suite, the Talbot Suite and the Library for smaller rooms, and a Ballroom that takes 80 to 148 for the wedding breakfast and the evening. Lytham town centre is a two-minute walk behind it.

What makes Clifton Arms wedding photography different from any other hotel is what is outside the front door. The Green is right there, the estuary beyond it, and the windmill is 600 metres east along the front, a ten-minute walk in a dress. The old wooden jetty sits near the windmill, and Lowther Gardens is a few minutes the other way. You do not need a car and you do not need to leave your guests for long. We can get you to the windmill and back in twenty-five minutes with the photographs done.

We are Lee and Dom, two photographers from Poulton-le-Fylde, and you get both of us at every wedding. One of us stays with the guests on the Green while the other walks you along the front. Prices start at £599 for a Half Day, which covers a Clifton Suite ceremony, the drinks and the walk to the windmill, and the Full Day runs on through the speeches in the Ballroom to the first dance.

A fair warning on the weather. The Green is open to the estuary and it is windy, more often than not. Hold the veil, bring a coat for the walk, and let us do the sunset from the hotel steps if the front is blowing a gale. The sun goes down over the water to the west, in front of the hotel, so the evening light is on your side whichever way the wind is.

Clifton Arms wedding photography: how the day runs

  1. Morning

The sea-view rooms and the suites on the front make a bright morning. The bridal room has been described by other photographers as large and light, and the bay windows give us window light for the dress and the details. One of us is upstairs with you, the other photographs the Clifton Suite set for the ceremony and nips out to the Green for the hotel from the front before the guests arrive.

  2. Ceremony

The Clifton Suite is the ceremony room, with the bay window over the Green and the estuary behind it. It holds 50, or 80 with the Talbot Suite opened up. You are lit from the side by the window, which is the best light in the building, and we keep to the edges of the room so nobody is looking at a photographer. Confetti goes on the Green straight after, with the hotel front behind you.

  3. Drinks and the front

Drinks are usually in the Talbot Suite or, in summer, out on the terrace. We do the family groups on the Green while everyone is together, then take the two of you along the front to the windmill and the jetty. On a bright day the estuary is wide and silver; on a grey one it is moody, and both work.

  4. Breakfast and speeches

The Ballroom. It is a long room that takes a formal meal and then a dance floor, so we photograph the tables dressed before anyone sits down and we cover the speeches from two positions, one on the speaker and one on the top table reactions.

  5. Evening

Sunset is over the water in front of the hotel. We take you out onto the Green for ten minutes as the sun goes, then back in for the first dance in the Ballroom. If you have added Same-Day Prints, they are handed over in the Ballroom before the night is over.

Best photo spots at Clifton Arms

  • Lytham Green in front of the hotel

The hotel front behind you, the grass in front, and the whole wedding party in one frame. Confetti, groups and the sunset champagne pop all happen here.

  • The Clifton Suite bay window

Side light from the estuary. The signing of the register and the first portraits after the vows.

  • Lytham Windmill and the jetty

Ten minutes east along the front. The windmill is the photograph couples ask for, and the old wooden jetty beside it is quiet and low to the water.

  • The seafront at sunset

The sun sets over the estuary to the west, straight in front of the hotel. Ten minutes on the Green is enough.

  • Lowther Gardens

A few minutes west along West Beach. Formal beds and shelter from the wind on a rough day.

  • The front steps and the bays

Red brick and sandstone. The spot for the two of you if the weather keeps you close to the door.

Light and timing

This is a hotel with the sea on three sides of the view, so the light is big and changes fast. The front rooms, the Clifton Suite and the Ballroom’s windows face south over the Green, which means strong light through the bays in the middle of the day and soft, even light later on. For the ceremony we use the window as a side light and no flash. The Ballroom at night is a warm room with low lighting, and we set up two off-camera flashes for the speeches and the first dance so faces are clean and the room still looks like itself. Outside, the estuary acts as a huge reflector: even on an overcast day the Green is bright and the skies are wide, and on a clear evening the sun goes down over the water in front of you. The wind is the real issue, not the light; we carry a clamp light and a reflector but mostly we use the hotel front as a windbreak and keep the walks short. On a wet day the bays, the Library and the hotel staircase give us enough inside, and the Green is thirty seconds from the door the minute it stops.

Drone

The Clifton Arms is about a kilometre outside the Blackpool Airport flight restriction zone and about the same outside Warton’s, so the hotel itself is not in either circle. The catch is Warton’s runway protection strip, which runs out over the estuary and clips the shore near the jetty, just south of the Green. So the launch spot matters: we fly from the Green side of the hotel, not from the beach, and we ask Warton air traffic control beforehand so there is no doubt. The hotel, the Green and the windmill from above are a good set and we price them as an add-on at £149 with photography, refunded if the wind or the airspace stops us. Lytham front at 50 metres from the public is also a busy place on a summer Saturday, so this is one we plan rather than wing. More on our drone page.

Questions about photographing a wedding at Clifton Arms

Can we get to the windmill and back during the drinks?

Yes. It is 600 metres along the front, about ten minutes each way at wedding pace. We plan twenty-five minutes in total and one of us stays with your guests on the Green while you are gone.

What if it is blowing a gale on the Green?

It often is. We do the groups with the hotel as a windbreak, keep the walk short, and use Lowther Gardens or the hotel steps for the couple photographs. The sunset still happens in front of the hotel whatever the wind does.

Which room is the ceremony in?

The Clifton Suite, with its bay window over the Green. It holds 50 on its own or 80 with the Talbot Suite. The Ballroom takes 80 to 148 for the breakfast and the evening.

Can you fly the drone at the Clifton Arms?

Usually, from the right spot. The hotel is outside the Blackpool and Warton circles, but Warton’s runway strip reaches the shore near the jetty, so we launch from the Green side and clear it with Warton first. It is an optional add-on at £149 with photography.

Can we have Same-Day Prints at the Clifton Arms?

Yes. One of us edits during the breakfast and the folders are handed over in the Ballroom before the night is over. It is an optional add-on from £69.
