Mitton Hall Wedding Photographer
Mitton Hall wedding photographer: two of us for the day at the 15th-century manor house on the Ribble between Whalley and Clitheroe, with the Party Room for up to 165 and the new Walled Garden outside.
Why we love photographing at Mitton Hall
If you are looking for a Mitton Hall wedding photographer, here is the place as we see it. Mitton Hall sits on the south bank of the Ribble at Little Mitton, just off the road from Whalley to Clitheroe, with Mitton Bridge and the Aspinall Arms a few hundred yards along and the Grade I All Hallows church on the far bank. The house itself goes back to 1487. The old Great Hall is oak-panelled with a minstrels’ gallery eight feet up and a priest hole in the fireplace, and the rest was rebuilt in stone in the 1840s. It has been a hotel since 1980, and the venue has refurbished it recently so the staircase and chandelier are now as photographed as the beams.
There are two licensed ceremony settings. The Party Room is the big light room with river views and its own entrance, seating up to 165 for the ceremony and the same for the breakfast, and it turns into the evening room for up to 250. The Walled Garden is the new outdoor option, with greenery all round you. Then you have the Great Hall, the terrace and the gardens stepping down to the river for everything in between.
We work as two photographers as standard. One of us is with the bridal room in the morning while the other is with the groomsmen and the guests arriving, and in the ceremony one of us is at the front for your faces and one at the back for the room. Full Day Mitton Hall wedding photography is £1,049 on a weekday and £1,295 at the weekend; all the options are on the prices page. We are based in Blackpool and the Ribble Valley is one of our regular runs.
Mitton Hall wedding photography: how the day runs
-
Morning
Most couples get ready in one of the six suites. The King Suite with the four-poster is where the dress tends to hang, and it photographs well. The groomsmen usually end up in the bar or on the terrace for a drink, so Dom goes down to them. We like to get the two sides of the morning side by side in the album.
-
Ceremony
In the Party Room the light comes from the river side, big and even, and the neutral decor means your flowers set the colour. We put one of us by the registrars’ table and the other up the far end. In the Walled Garden it is all greenery behind you, and we use the walls to keep the breeze off the veil. If it rains the garden ceremony moves inside.
-
Drinks and photographs
Confetti on the terrace, then drinks spill out onto the terrace and the gardens. The group photos go on the lawn with the house behind, and then we take the two of you down the stone terraces and steps towards the river for ten minutes. The old Great Hall is a good indoor spot while the drinks are being poured.
-
Breakfast and speeches
The breakfast goes in the function room, up to 165 on any layout you like. It is a bright room, and we work the speeches from both sides so you get the speaker and the faces listening.
-
Evening
The Party Room becomes the party, with the private bar licensed to half past midnight. Sunset is from the rear balcony and the terrace, looking out over the valley, and we go out for it just after the speeches if the timings land right.
Best photo spots at Mitton Hall
-
The Great Hall
Oak panelling, the carved screen and the minstrels’ gallery above. The character shot of Mitton Hall, and the one for a rainy day.
-
The staircase and chandelier
Refurbished and bright. Good for the walk down and for a close one of the two of you.
-
The terrace and the stone steps
The gardens drop towards the Ribble in terraces. The steps give us levels for groups and a walk-away for the couple.
-
The rear balcony
Looks out over the river and the valley. The sunset spot.
-
The Walled Garden
Green all round, sheltered, and set up for a ceremony. Also a soft spot for portraits in hard midday light.
-
Mitton Bridge and All Hallows
A short walk along the road: the old bridge over the Ribble and the 13th-century church on the far bank. Worth it for an engagement session or if the timings allow on the day.
Light and timing
The house was built to face south, so the front is in sun and the best views are from the back, towards the river. That is where the Party Room and the balcony are, and they get soft, open light from the north side rather than direct sun, which is ideal for the ceremony and the breakfast because nobody is squinting and nothing is blown out. The front and the drive get the afternoon sun. The Great Hall is dark and brown in the best way, and we bring flash bounced off the panelling or a small light on a stand to keep the warmth without turning it muddy. The Walled Garden is open to the sky, so at midday in summer it is bright and flat and we use the walls for shade; by late afternoon it is lovely. Sunset drops behind the valley to the west, seen from the balcony and the terrace, and the two minutes after the sun goes are the ones we want for the two of you. Rain plan: the Great Hall, the staircase and the Party Room windows, and the terrace under a brolly for a quick one. We bring two cameras each, flash for the hall and the evening, and a mono light for the first dance.
Drone
Mitton Hall is clear for the drone. There is no airport flight restriction zone in the Ribble Valley; Warton aerodrome is about 31 km to the west and Blackpool Airport about 40 km. The shot is the hall on its bend of the river with Mitton Bridge and the church beyond, and Pendle Hill in the distance. We launch from the lawn away from the hotel guests, keep off the road, and tell the venue in the morning. Adding the drone to your photography is £149.
Questions about photographing a wedding at Mitton Hall
Where are the best photos at Mitton Hall?
The Great Hall for character, the staircase for the walk down, the terraces for groups and the rear balcony at sunset. If you want the river, we walk down the terraces, and if you want the bridge and the church we can do that on an engagement session so it does not eat into your day.
Is the Party Room good for a ceremony?
Yes. It is light from the river side, neutral, and big enough for 165 without the back rows feeling far away. One of us stands at the front and one at the back so you get both your faces and the whole room.
Can you photograph a ceremony in the Walled Garden?
Yes. It is sheltered, which helps with veils and confetti. The light is flat at midday in summer, so a two o’clock or later ceremony looks nicer there than noon. The registrars decide on the day if the weather turns, and the Party Room is the fallback.
Can the drone fly at Mitton Hall?
Yes. No flight restriction zone within 30 km. We keep well clear of the hotel guests and the road and let the venue know. The drone add-on is £149.
Can we have prints on the night?
Yes, as an optional add-on. We hand them over in the Party Room before the night is over, from £69 for five. See the Same-Day Prints page.
