Why we love photographing at Bartle Hall

If you have booked Bartle Hall and you are looking for a wedding photographer, here is how we would work it. Bartle Hall is two venues on one estate: the Country House, where you get married, and the Coaching Barn further into the woods, where you eat and dance. That walk between the two is the thing to plan around. It is the reason we send two photographers to every wedding here. One of us can be in the barn with your guests while the other is still in the house with you.

The house is 18th century, with a tree-lined drive in from Lea Lane through the gates. That drive is the first photograph of the day and the last. Inside, the bar and lounge is where your guests gather, and the ceremony room sits a few steps away behind a pair of double doors. You come down the grand staircase and along a long aisle. It is a proper entrance, and it needs a photographer at the bottom of the stairs and another at the far end of the aisle to get both the look on your face and the look on everyone else’s.

The barn is a different building altogether: exposed brick, high timber beams, a long bar, a dance floor with a raised stage for the band, and double doors out onto a covered terrace with real flame heaters. Beyond the terrace the gardens are lit by permanent festoon lights and there is a gated patch they call the secret garden. It is the sort of place where the evening photographs look after themselves, as long as somebody is out there with a camera when the lights come on.

Bartle is in Woodplumpton parish, between Preston and Kirkham, just off the M55. We are based at Poulton-le-Fylde, so it is about 25 minutes for us. We cover it under our normal wedding prices, with a full day from £1,049 on a weekday and two photographers as standard. One thing to know before you book anything with a drone: Bartle Hall sits inside the Springfields restricted airspace, so we cannot fly here. More on that below.

Bartle Hall wedding photography: how the day runs

  1. Morning

Most couples get ready on site. The suites are on the first floor of the Country House, and Thicket Lodge in the woodland is the other option, with a big jacuzzi bath and folding doors onto the trees. Lee takes one side of the wedding party and Dom the other, so nobody has to rush. The breakfast room looks over the gardens and has good window light for the quieter details.

  2. Ceremony

Guests are taken from the bar and lounge into the ceremony room while you wait at the top of the staircase. The doors open, you come down, and the aisle runs long. We stand one at the stairs and one at the front. The room is neutral with wood floors, so we keep the flash off and work with the window light.

  3. Confetti and drinks

Straight out of the ceremony room into the gardens for confetti. Drinks are on the lawn, where the venue has put croquet out in the past. This is when we do the family groups, with the house behind you, and then take you off down the drive and into the woodland for twenty minutes on your own.

  4. The barn

Everyone walks across to the Coaching Barn for the wedding breakfast and the speeches. The bar is in the middle of the room, so the speeches are easy to cover from two sides. The event kitchen is attached, which means courses come out quickly and the timings tend to hold.

  5. Evening

Doors open onto the terrace, the festoon lights come on across the gardens, and the outdoor kitchen fires up its pizza oven. First dance inside, then we go out onto the terrace for the lit photographs. If you have added Same-Day Prints, they are handed over in the barn before the night is over.

Best photo spots at Bartle Hall

  • The grand staircase

The entrance down the stairs is the photograph most couples book Bartle Hall for. We have one of us at the bottom and one in the aisle so you get both angles.

  • The tree-lined drive and the gates

Long, straight and shaded. Good at any time of day, and best when you walk back up it together after the drinks reception.

  • The woodland

Sixteen acres of it. Dappled light in summer, bare and dramatic in winter. Allow an extra ten minutes to walk out to the good bits.

  • The Pagoda and the lawn

The outdoor ceremony spot in summer, and the drinks lawn the rest of the year. Open sky, so this is where the big group photograph happens.

  • The barn terrace at night

Festoon lights, flame heaters and the gardens lit behind. We shoot this after the first dance, when everyone has a drink in hand.

  • The secret garden

A gated corner off the barn gardens. Small, quiet and good for five minutes away from the party.

Light and timing

The Country House rooms are bright during the day, with big windows onto the gardens, so the ceremony and the morning need no extra light. The woodland is a different matter. Under the trees it is two or three stops darker than the lawn, so we plan the couple portraits there for the drinks reception rather than later. In winter that means straight after the ceremony. The Coaching Barn is dark by design, with warm atmospheric lighting under the beams. We bring off-camera flash for the speeches and the first dance and bounce it off the brick so it still looks like the barn. On a wet day the plan moves to the staircase, the lounges and the covered terrace, which is heated, and the walk between the buildings happens under the umbrellas we bring.

Drone

We cannot fly a drone at Bartle Hall, and nor can anyone else. The hall is inside EGR312, the restricted area around the Springfields nuclear fuel site at Salwick. It is a 2 nautical mile circle from the ground up to 2,100 ft, and the hall is about 2.4 km from the site, well inside it. We will not take a booking for the drone here, so you are not paying for something we cannot deliver. The drive, the woodland and the lawn give us the wide shots from the ground instead. If you want to know how we check airspace at other venues, it is on our drone page.

Questions about photographing a wedding at Bartle Hall

Can you cover the house and the barn at the same time?

Yes, because there are two of us at every wedding. While one of us walks over to the Coaching Barn with your guests and photographs the room before anyone sits down, the other stays with you at the Country House. Nobody misses the first look at the barn.

Where do the couple photographs happen at Bartle Hall?

The drive, the woodland and the lawn, usually during the drinks reception. The woodland is darker than it looks, so we go there earlier rather than later. In summer we nip back out to the barn terrace for ten minutes at sunset.

Can you fly a drone at Bartle Hall?

No. The hall is inside the Springfields restricted area, EGR312, so flying is not allowed. We do not sell the drone add-on for weddings here.

Can we have Same-Day Prints at Bartle Hall?

Yes. Add them from £69 for five prints in folders. One of us edits during the wedding breakfast in the Coaching Barn and hands them over before the night is over. They are an optional extra, not part of the standard package.

How far is Bartle Hall from you?

About 25 minutes from our base at Poulton-le-Fylde, FY6, out along the M55. Travel is worked out by distance and shown on your quote, with the rule on our prices page.
