Why we love photographing at The Glass House

If you are getting married at The Glass House and you want a wedding photographer who already knows the room, that is us. It is on our doorstep. We are based at Poulton-le-Fylde, about ten minutes up the road, and the Glass House is the venue we would send you to look at if you asked us for somewhere modern and bright near Blackpool. We have photographed a couple here and flown the drone over the estate, and the aerial on this page is from that flight.

The whole day happens in one room. The ceremony, the wedding breakfast and the dancing all sit under the same timber beams, with mirrored bi-fold doors to divide the space while the staff turn it round. The walls are glass, floor to ceiling, with long bi-fold doors onto a private landscaped garden, and the view goes out over the golf course towards the Pennines. For a photographer that means one thing above everything else: light. On a bright day you can shoot the ceremony with no flash at all.

Because nobody has to move between rooms, there is no dead time. We use that. The twenty minutes other venues spend walking people from a ceremony room to a dining room is twenty minutes we spend with you in the garden or out on the course. It also makes Same-Day Prints easy if you add them: one of us edits at a table in the corner during the breakfast and the folders are handed over before the night is over.

Staining is a village between Blackpool and Poulton-le-Fylde, just off the M55, so guests from Lytham, Fleetwood and Preston all find it easily, and Blackpool hotels are a ten-minute taxi. We cover it on our standard wedding prices, with a half day from £599 and two photographers at every wedding. The drone can fly here, which is not true of much of the Fylde, and the details are further down.

The Glass House wedding photography: how the day runs

  1. Morning

The dressing room at the Glass House is small, with three make-up stations, a full-length mirror and a private toilet, and you can have it from 9am. It suits the couple and the closest few. If the rest of the wedding party is getting ready in one of the lodges or at home, one of us goes there and the other covers the room being set up, the flowers and the arrivals.

  2. Ceremony

Indoors, the room is set with the glass wall and the countryside behind you. We stand one at the front and one at the back, both working with daylight. In summer the white gazebo in the garden is licensed, and the guests sit on the lawn with the course behind them. Confetti is straight off the gazebo steps.

  3. Drinks and photographs

Guests go out into the private garden with a drink and the venue does not move anyone between spaces. We do the family groups by the glass wall, then walk you a few hundred yards onto the course for the wide photographs with the hills behind.

  4. Breakfast and speeches

The bi-fold doors open and the same room is now the dining room. The speeches happen with the glass behind the top table, which is bright and needs care with exposure, so we move to the sides and shoot across. Fairy lights on the beams and the trees come on as it gets darker.

  5. Evening

The LED bar and the dance floor are at the far end, with a big outdoor area just outside. The room goes from daylight to coloured uplighters and fairy lights, and we switch to flash. Ten minutes before sunset we take you out onto the terrace by the brasserie, which faces south over the course, and then you are back for the first dance.

Best photo spots at The Glass House

  • The glass wall and the private garden

Soft light from three sides and the countryside in the frame. Where the family groups happen, and where we do the couple photographs on a wet day without going out.

  • The white gazebo

Licensed for summer ceremonies. Open sky, the lawn in front, and the best spot for the confetti photograph.

  • Out on the course

A short walk onto Staining Lodge’s 160 acres for the wide shots, with the Pennines on the horizon to the east on a clear day.

  • The brasserie terrace

The clubhouse terrace faces south over the course. Sunset, ten minutes, then back for the first dance.

  • The dressing room

Big mirror and window light for the preparations and the dress.

  • From the air

The glasshouse roof among the fairways at golden hour. The drone is an optional add-on, and this is one of the few Fylde venues where we can fly it without asking anyone.

Light and timing

The Glass House is bright all day, and that is its gift and its catch. The catch is reflections and hard sun. At midday in summer the glass wall throws light across the room from behind whoever is standing at the front, so for the ceremony we expose for faces and let the windows go bright, and we shoot the speeches from the sides rather than straight into the glass. Late afternoon is easier, as the light drops and comes in low. We plan the couple portraits for the hour before sunset, on the course or the terrace, and we come back in as the fairy lights on the beams take over. For the dancing we use off-camera flash bounced away from the glass so you do not get our own light reflected back. On a wet day the plan barely changes. The garden stays in every frame through the glass, the ceremony is indoors anyway, and the doors onto the garden give us a dry, covered edge to shoot from.

Drone

The drone can fly at The Glass House. The venue is about 5.8 km from Blackpool Airport, and the airport’s flight restriction zone reaches 2.5 nautical miles out, so the Glass House sits roughly 1 km outside it. Warton’s zone is further still, to the south. We have flown here before and the aerial on this page is from that flight. We still check Drone Assist on the morning, keep 50 metres from your guests and stay off the fairways while golfers are on them, and we refund the drone if weather stops us. Add the flyover for £149 alongside your photography. See our drone page for how it works.

Questions about photographing a wedding at The Glass House

Have you photographed at The Glass House before?

Yes. We have photographed a couple here and flown the drone over the estate, and the aerial on this page is ours. We have not yet photographed a full wedding day in the room, which is why the gallery is short for now.

Is the glass a problem for photographs?

It needs managing rather than fearing. Reflections and bright windows behind the top table are the two things to plan for. We expose for faces, shoot the speeches from the side, and keep our flash angled away from the glass in the evening.

Can you fly a drone at The Glass House?

Yes. It is about 1 km outside the Blackpool Airport zone, so no permission is needed. We check the airspace on the day and keep clear of guests and golfers. The flyover is an optional add-on at £149 with photography.

Where do you do the couple photographs?

The private garden by the glass wall during the drinks, a walk out onto the course for the wide ones, and the south-facing terrace at sunset. Ten minutes at each, and you are never far from your guests.

Can we add Same-Day Prints here?

Yes, and it is a good venue for them because nobody moves rooms. One of us edits during the wedding breakfast and hands the prints over in the Glass House before the night is over. From £69 for five in folders, as an optional extra.
