Imperial Hotel Blackpool Wedding Photographer
Imperial Hotel Blackpool wedding photography by two photographers: the Louis Room over the sea, the Washington Suite’s 1901 ballroom, 180 bedrooms, and the North Promenade over the road for sunset.
Why we love photographing at Imperial Hotel Blackpool
We are Lee and Dom, two Blackpool wedding photographers, and the Imperial is the hotel we would send our own family to. If you are looking for an Imperial Hotel Blackpool wedding photographer, here is how we would work it. The hotel has stood on North Promenade since 1867, it is Grade II listed, and it has 180 bedrooms, which means your guests can stay in the building where the wedding is. It is a ten-minute walk north of the Tower and the Winter Gardens, with a tram stop outside the front door and the sea across the road.
There are two wedding rooms that matter. The Louis Room is on the seafront side, with tall windows onto the Promenade, chandeliers, ornate mouldings and gold and ivory décor. The hotel’s Louis package is 50 guests in the day and 80 in the evening, and the ceremony, breakfast and reception all happen in that one room, with the events team turning it round between each part. The Washington Suite is the big one. It was added in 1901 as a ballroom with a glass ceiling, so people could dance under the stars, and it has an arched ceiling with detailed plasterwork. The hotel asks for a minimum of 75 day guests and 120 evening guests for it, and the capacity chart gives 400 for a banquet. Two smaller suites take weddings from 12 people. The ceremony is with Blackpool Council’s registrars, who you book separately.
What makes the Imperial a photographer’s hotel is the building between the rooms. The reception hall, the staircase, the long corridors with their carpets and the Number 10 bar with its prime ministers on the wall all give you backgrounds that look like the hotel and not like a function suite. Charles Dickens stayed here in 1869, and the party conferences filled it for years, which is why the bar has that name.
Across the road is North Promenade. The sea wall, the railings and the wide pavement face west, so the sun sets straight in front of the hotel, and in winter that happens before the breakfast. North Pier is a short walk south. The hotel also offers a drinks reception on board a heritage tram along the Promenade as an add-on, and if you book that, we come with you.
Imperial Hotel Blackpool wedding photography: how the day runs
-
Morning
Preparations are upstairs. The hotel puts the bridal suite in its package for the wedding night, and most couples book it the night before as well, so one of us is in the suite from mid-morning while the other is with whoever is getting ready elsewhere, and the sea-facing bedrooms have the best daylight for it.
-
Ceremony
In the Louis Room the registrars set up with the windows to one side, so the light falls across you rather than behind you. One of us stays at the front for faces, the other at the back for the walk in. In the Washington Suite the room is wider, the light is the chandeliers and the ceiling, and we add a little flash for the signing and the walk out.
-
Drinks and photographs
Guests spill into the reception hall and the Number 10 bar. We do confetti on the front steps, then the family groups in the hall, and then we take the two of you across the road to the sea wall for twenty minutes. If the tram is booked, the drinks reception is on board and we photograph it rolling along the prom.
-
Breakfast and speeches
In the Louis Room, if the top table sits with the windows behind it, we expose for faces and let the windows go bright. In the Washington Suite we work from the edges of the room and the top table is lit by the ceiling.
-
Evening
The first dance in the Washington Suite under that ceiling is the shot. The package includes a DJ and dance floor, so the lighting is coloured and moving, and we bring our own flash to keep faces clean. Before the night is over, one of us nips out with you to the Promenade railings with the hotel lit behind you.
Best photo spots at Imperial Hotel Blackpool
-
The sea wall on North Promenade
Across the road, west-facing, the sunset straight ahead. Twenty minutes, a coat each, and the wind in your hair.
-
The Washington Suite ceiling
The arched plasterwork from 1901, best from the floor looking up with the two of you under it, and again during the first dance.
-
The Louis Room windows
Daylight from the seafront for the couple portrait and for the signing of the register.
-
The reception hall and staircase
Carpets, panelling and height. The family groups go here when it is raining and the couple portrait goes here in the evening.
-
The Number 10 bar
A quiet, dark bar with the prime ministers’ photographs. Ten minutes for the two of you with a drink before the breakfast.
-
A heritage tram on the Promenade
The hotel’s drinks-reception add-on. The Tower goes past the window.
Light and timing
The Louis Room has daylight from the seafront windows, and the light changes through the day because it faces west: soft in the morning, flat at midday, warm and low from mid-afternoon. We place the ceremony and the signing so the windows light your faces, and for the breakfast we expose for people and let the view go bright. The Washington Suite is lit by its chandeliers and ceiling, with little daylight, so we use fast lenses and off-camera flash for the groups, the speeches and the dancing. The corridors and the hall are dim and warm, which we shoot as they are. Outside, North Promenade faces west onto open sea, so the sunset is in front of the hotel and the wind comes straight off the water. Rain plan: the hall, the staircase and the bar give us three indoor backgrounds without leaving the building.
Drone
The Imperial is about 2 km north of the Blackpool Airport flight restriction zone, a 2.5 nautical mile circle from the airport at Squires Gate plus runway strips, up to 2,000 ft. No airport permission is needed to fly at the hotel. The aerial is the hotel’s frontage, the Promenade and the sea, best with low sun from the west. We still check Drone Assist on the morning, because the Illuminations and the Air Show have brought temporary restrictions along the front before, and we keep 50 m from people not part of the wedding, so we fly early or late when the prom is quiet. With photography it is £149. More on our drone page.
Questions about photographing a wedding at Imperial Hotel Blackpool
Can you photograph the ceremony in the Louis Room?
Yes. The seafront windows give us daylight, so we work without flash during the vows. One of us is at the front for faces and the rings, the other at the back for the walk in and the wide shot.
Where do the couple photographs happen at the Imperial?
Across the road on the sea wall, twenty minutes, with the sunset if the timings allow. Then inside on the staircase and in the Number 10 bar. If it rains we stay in and lose nothing but the sea.
Is the Washington Suite dark?
It has little daylight, so yes. We shoot it on fast lenses to keep the ceiling and the chandeliers, and we add flash for the groups and the dance floor so faces are clean.
Do you photograph the heritage tram drinks reception?
Yes. If you book the hotel’s tram add-on, one of us is on board with you and the other photographs it from the Promenade as it goes past.
Can you fly the drone at the Imperial Hotel?
Yes. The hotel is about 2 km outside the airport zone, so no permission is needed. The flight is £149 with photography. It depends on the weather and on the Promenade being quiet enough to keep clear of people.
